Did fashion design from FIT, NY. Launched label, ‘Natasha Dalal’, in 2013. Designs semi-formal and formal dresses; branched out into lehangas, gowns, most recently couture bridal wear. Known for romantic silhouettes, exquisite detailing, embroidered laces, delicate beading, featherweight tulle, and rich silks. Her signature – modern glamour with timeless sophistication.
From quite early in life, she showed a mix of consistency and constant evolution, clarity about goals coupled with an ever-experimenting spirit. For example, her dream was to go to New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), and she dedicated a year to prepare for it. There she met talented and aspiring designers, and the course opened up new horizons. A multi-cultural metropolis like New York, with its diverse array of art shows, museums, and waves of creativity enriched her mind and soul. It also enabled her to get a clear direction about her aesthetics.
Her clothes are “not-too-fussy” with simple silhouettes. But they have “immense detailing”, and are “carefully thought-out”. As she says, “Attention to detail, when it comes to beading, is something I love.” She combines modernity with the classic, contemporary with the vintage. Subtle color palette ensures that the clothes are neither too shiny nor loud. The idea is to be timeless—she loves her mother’s collection of classic sarees that “are still relevant today”. She generally knows what she wants and, hence, design and decision come naturally to her. Yet, her style and voice evolve continuously. “Every holiday I take, book I read, and person I meet has an impact on how I think and, therefore, how I create as a designer. I will be evolving pretty much forever.”
